Here are the details of the USB 3.0 driver software and hardware I have:ĭescription : Intel(R) USB 3.0 Host Controller Switch Driver If I subsequently plug the airpcap into a USB 3.0 port, it doesn't work and can BSOD or hang my system provided I stick to my eSATA/USB 2.0 port, everything's dandy (and it also works in Virtual Box). 64-bit version must be installed and first-run as Administartor) Install Wireshark (32-bit version recommended. Fresh reboot and install airpcap & winpcap on USB2.0 (eSATA/USB) port.Ĩ. Use free CCleaner to fix registry again (anything "broken" by previous step)ħ. Use nirsoft's free RegScanner (get nirlauncher package it's amazing) to find all references to "wpcap", "winpcap", "airpcap" in the registry and delete them (not all can be deleted).Ħ. Use free CCleaner to fix any broken registry entries (also back's up registry)ĥ. Manually delete \Windows\System\Drivers\airpcap.sys (possibly unnecesary)Ĥ. Manually delete \Windows\SysWOW64\wpcap.sys and \Windows\SysWOW64\packet.dll (using freeware "Unlocker" s/w, requires reboot)ģ. Completely uninstall airpcap and winpcap (partial).Ģ. I could succesfully install the airpcap driver in a Win 7-32 guest, but it didn't see the adapter (or any USB adapter) being plugged in/out (despite succesfully adding "AirPcap Nx " and "All" device filters).ġ.
I had to use "Unlocker" to delete these files (at next reboot).Īnother issue that I found during my investigations was that Oracle's (otherwise excellent) latest free VirtualBox 4.1.20 software doesn't support devices plugged into USB 3.0 ports at all. The driver files wpcap.sys and packet.dll can be left ("undeletable") in the \Windows\SysWOW64 directory, causing subsequent installs of winpcap to fail (not gracefully). The weird thing is, *none* of the other USB devices I have installed have shown any problems, including:Ģ. I tried every combination of Winpcap 4.1.1 (as supplied) and 4.1.2 (latest version from internet) and Wireshark 1.2.5 (version supplied) & 1.8.2 (latest version from internet). I finally got everything working by using the eSATA/USB 2.0 port on my laptop (which is the only available USB 2.0 port, the other 4 being USB 3.0). if winpcap loaded at boot, or when I ran AirpcapConf.exe (sometimes it would stay up until I tried to flash the LED, and would then BSOD).

I could install the airpcap & winpcap drivers ok, but after rebooting I got BSOD almost any time the airpcap device was accessed (e.g. The problem *may be* related to the Intel USB 3.0 ports or drivers. It has taken me nearly a week to get the thing to work.

I just bought an airpcap Nx USB adapter for use under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my (lovely new) 16GB Dell Alienware M17x R4 and I thought I would share my experiences.
